Some of you have not been outside the US, these are some items to keep in mind:
1. Passport, pack and take care of your passport at all times.
2. Call the cellphone carrier and let them know you might need a roaming package from x date to x date.
3. Call your debit card bank and let them know you will be using your card in Guatemala, some banks block the card if is not used in the US for security reasons. Do the same with your credit card.
4. Take some dollars with you, $60-$80 in change of $1-$5-$10 (not coins we do not accept coins or $50 bills). Does not hurt to have some cash and is mostly accepted everywhere.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER I GET OFF THE PLANE?
After getting off the plane you will need to pass customs and pick up your baggage. Exchange some money if you can in an ATM it is the most fair price you could get, our currency is called "Quetzal" and is equal to Q7.70 = $1, use GOOGLE for best conversion.
Wait inside the airport until your shuttle / uber arrives.
Do not let other people help you with the bags unless is the driver of your transport.
Place your passport in a safe spot, do not leave anything on the surface of the backpack if you are carrying something on your back.
I personally do not like Guatemala City, besides the traffic, heat and noise and that is why we are heading to Antigua.
WHERE IS ANTIGUA?
Antigua is our old capital and is located at like 1 hour from Guatemala City.
We are taking a shuttle from the airport to Antigua on Thursday, Friday the shuttle will pick up the ones that want to leave with us to Pana at 12:00 pm. There is a spreadsheet in the WhatsApp group where you can fill the information, as well as a form.
Is highly recommended that you drop off your baggage into your hotel / Airbnb before going around.
Leave your passport in a safe place, do not carry it around.
Antigua has a central park and one block from it is a famous arch, is a walkable city but the street are made of stone, so high heals not recommended.
I have created a map with the hottest places, all of them walkable distance, there are taxis and tuk tuk to get around if you need to.
We did not reserve any restaurant so feel free to explore, we are having 36 people from the US. This make it harder to do something, but we could meet for drinks around 7:30pm - 8:00pm in Mono Loco Antigua (best real nachos).
There is also a brewery we mostly be in before this time Antigua Brewery.
We will be leaving Friday 31st. to Panajachel.
WHAT TO DO IN PANAJACHEL?
Our ride from Antigua to Panajachel will be approx. 2.5 hours, depends on the traffic, it is Friday and some markets are busy during this day.
The shuttle usually drop you off to the hotel or Airbnb if the street allows it, if it is beyond the area they cover might be an extra charge.
Drop off your baggage and leave your passport in a safe place.
Most of the streets are not made of stone, but some are, comfortable shoes are recommended.
Please eat in restaurants and avoid food from carts on the street. In latin america we have a thing call the moktezuma revenge, nothing serious but if you are not used to visit other countries is not recommended.
Beer is sold everywhere, and is legal to drink on the street. There are a lot of restaurants in the Santander Street with all kind of food that you can try out. Refer to the MAP in case you want to hit the recommended options.
Explore and enjoy, people are friendly and most restaurants accept credit cards, there are various ATMs too, try to get out little by little cash, our money is colorful so very easy to use it.
We will having a meet and greet, in Atlantis, located at the entry of the Santander street, all tuk tuks know. More details to come
